Here a few recommendations to try the next time you through some seafood on the grill
White wines:
Lurton Pinot Gris (about $6): This one is very bright and lean with lots of green tart fruit, and a bargain at $6. Great with a grilled sea bass or ocean catfish.
Picpoul de Pinet (about $6): "Picpoul" means "pucker up," and you'll know where the name came from as soon as you taste it. Fantastic with raw bar.
Coppola Bianco (about $9): This is a fun wine, a delicious blend of who-knows-what white grapes from California. Not sweet, but so much fruit it almost tastes sweet, rich and aromatic, and really good with a strong grilled white fish like red snapper.
St. Michael-Eppan Pinot Grigio (about $10): Bracing acidity balances beautifully with round, ripe pear and peach flavors. Great with shishkabob of grilled shrimp, scallops, melon and apricot.
Murphy-Goode Fume Blanc (about $13): Deliciousness is job one for any winemaker, and this wine is an absolute crowd-pleaser that captures the vitality of sauvignon blanc in a California style best described as "yummy." Buttery, toasty oak flavors are everywhere, the fruit is ripe and full with a great citrus zing at the end, beloved by all.
Chateau Cruzeau (about $14): Another Lurton wine, this time a traditional sauvignon blanc from Bordeaux with great style. Somewhere in the mix it tastes slightly stony, like a sidewalk smells right after it rains. Should come with its own icy plate of oysters.
Pink wines:
Chateau Aqueria Tavel Rose (about $14): Tavel, a neighbor of the famous Chateauneuf-du-Pape, makes the best rose in France, tasting like a red wine but drinking like a white wine.
Sanford Pinot Noir Vin Gris (about $15): You'd have to look twice to know this isn't a red wine, and you could still be wondering: extremely light red of extremely dark rose? Save it for meaty fish: tuna, swordfish and the like.
Red wines:.
Dr. Taurino Salice Salentino (about $10): Produced under the hot sun of southern Italy, it's no surprise this country blend is a great summer wine. Very rustic, nicely tannic, plain spoken and un-fancy, it keeps tasting great while it warms up.
Beringer "Founder's Reserve" Pinot Noir (about $12): This pinot noir is bright and fresh with good concentration and flavors.
Rosenblum Zinfandel (about $13): Zinfandel is America's best red wine, and the Rosenblum is a superb all-purpose, all-occasion specimen. Great with all things grilled. Matches up especially well with hot marinades or barbecue sauces.

The Chris Robinson Brotherhood, a name redolent of 60s be-ins, free love and loose rockin' - all of which fits to varying degrees. Instead of using The Black Crowes hiatus to homestead a bit, Robinson has been woodshedding a rootsy, wily group of skilled players around California, mining deep album cut covers and carving out a fascinating, quite different set of fresh compositions.

Chris Robinson Brotherhood - 04.20.11 - by Josh Miller
Things were a bit tighter and more focused at The Independent, where The New Parish meandered a bit, albeit lovingly and with the best of intentions. One takes the ride the Brotherhood is offering, especially since much of what's being played is new material. It forces the listener to simply be present as the Brotherhood's rock gestalt gestates on stages. It's a brave choice but one that asks that the audience accept that this isn't pure entertainment.
After 20 years in the game, Robinson is still hell-bent on innovating, unearthing different aspects of himself as a songwriter and performer, and he thrives when surrounded by guys like this who understand on a cellular level that safe and simple isn't the way to roll with Chris. This isn't to imply that the Brotherhood shows aren't a ball, frequently tapping into rock's earliest energies and flooding the room with boogie juice, but this group is clearly questing after something. My gut says they haven't found it yet, but they're after it and the chase is bloody exciting to witness.

A few key things to note:
-Neal Casal is just lethal in this band. Rarely has anyone given him this much free rein as a guitarist, and he's sparking off increasingly interesting stuff in Robinson's guitar work, too. Sinewy, bright and forceful and delicate by turns, Casal's playing rides in the meat of the music much of the time, not drawing undo attention to itself but grabbing the crowd by the lapels when he solos. He's a very different axe foil than Robinson has ever worked with before and definitely the most satisfying of his solo ventures.
-Older Robinson solo material such as “Like A Tumbleweed In Eden," “40 Days" and “Sunday Sound" are infused with crackling new life in the Brotherhood, the songs split open to reveal codas and intros we've never heard before, reminding us that Chris has written a lot of quality stuff outside of the Crowes.
What my three nights with the Brotherhood - who are putting on two set shows that total close to three hours with encores - have shown me is Chris Robinson has a serious knack for picking his musical foils. His latest project builds with patient intensity while seeking to kick up a lil' dust in a really friendly way, an approach that works best when surrounded by likeminded attendees.

For many, wine is a good addition to a fine meal, or a companion piece to a gathering. Often times these same people do not realize that the wine that they drink has very real health benefits. Below are some ways that moderate wine intake can positively affect one's health.
1. Kidney Stones
A new study from Harvard University researcher Gary Curhan and colleagues, using more than 81,000 women participants drawn from the Nurses' Health Study, found that an increase in fluid intake significantly reduces risk for kidney stones and that risk reduction was greatest for wine compared with other beverages. Out of 17 beverages, including tea, coffee, fruit juices, milk and water, wine was associated with the highest reduction in risk - 59%.
2. Artery Deposits
New Data from the Bruneck Study (Italy) was reported by Australian and Italian researchers in the May 1998 issue of Stroke. They conclude that light to moderate alcohol consumers faced a lower risk of atherosclerosis (early atherogenesis) than either abstainers or heavy drinkers. Arteriosclerosis, the gradual build-up of fatty deposits in the arteries, is the leading contributor to coronary heart disease and fatal heart attacks.
3. Cancer
Among moderate drinkers, those who consumed at least 30% of their alcohol intake in the form of wine were at slightly lower risk than non-drinkers for Upper Digestive Tract cancers. They speculate that compounds found in wine, such as resveratrol, may exert powerful anticarcinogenic effects that protect against any cancer-causing effects of alcohol. “Wine contains several components with possible anticarcinogenic effects - these may exert their action locally in parallel with the possible effect of ethanol.”

Often great things do not have to be expensive, or even far away, especially if you are a wine love. There are many great wine experiences that one can have in California that are memorable, but won't break the bank.
Highway 29
This Getaway will take you up Highway 29 from Yountville, just past the town of St Helena. The five famous and historic wineries on this list represent wineries that have been instrumental in giving Napa Valley wines their worldwide recognition. You may want to plan a restaurant stop for lunch in St. Helena or at the northern end of the valley in the town of Calistoga. Whether you are from San Fran or Sacramento, these wineries are easily accessible.
Robert Mondavi Winery
The influence of Robert Mondavi and his winery have been instrumental in establishing worldwide attention for Napa Valley wines. The winery is perhaps the most visited and certainly one of the most recognized wineries in the world. The winery was established in 1966 when Robert Mondavi departed the family owned winery of Charles Krug. Robert Mondavi's vision was to use innovative winemaking techniques to create wines of high quality and distinction. Because of his success and leadership, many consider Robert Mondavi to be the father of California wine. A visit to this winery will give you a better feel and understanding of the Napa Valley. If you are interested in a tour, call ahead to check on availability. The Robert Mondavi winery is located about one mile north of the town of Oakville on the west side of the highway.
Beaulieu Vineyards
This is one of the oldest wineries in the valley founded in 1900 by Frenchman George de Latour. The winery has long been famous for fine reserve wines, particularly its estate George de Latour Cabernet Sauvignon. BV, as it is commonly called, established innovative winemaking techniques by its founder George de Latour and its renowned winemaker Andre Tchelistcheff. When the heirs of George de Latour sold the winery to the Hublein Corporation, it created quite a stir in the Valley. Today, the winery continues the tradition of making high-end wines. In addition to these wines, BV also produces several other wines from vineyards in the Central Coast of California. In addition to a regular tasting room, the winery has the George de Latour Private Reserve Room where for $25 you can taste five very special wines, including at least one of their older wines (library wines). This winery is worth a visit because of its past history and influence on the Napa Valley. Beaulieu Vineyards is located in the town of Rutherford on the east side of Highway 29.
Hidden Wineries
Believe it or not, there are some hidden wineries in the Napa Valley. It is hard to escape the crowds when visiting the Napa Valley especially on weekends. These wineries of the Napa Valley are sure to be less touristy. Some of these wineries are open by appointment only but don't let that discourage you. They love to have visitors and will make you feel at home. There are several other hidden wineries in the Napa Valley but these are our favorites.
Tres Sabores
Julie Johnson is the owner and winemaker of this secret and hidden winery near the base of the Mayacamus Mountains. You will need to call ahead to make an appointment and chances are Julie will lead you on a vineyard tour and have you taste her wonderful wines. Julie's Cabernet and Zinfandel vineyards are certified organic. You will see bat and owl houses, cover plants, and other sustainable farming practices. This a great trip out to the ranch and something you will not soon forget.
Summers Winery
Summers Winery is a small family-owned winery located at the very north end of the Napa Valley on Tubbs Lane. Summers has a very inviting picnic area that includes a Bocce Ball court. Two wines in particular standout at Summers Winery, the Charbono and the Petite Sirah. The Charbono grape used to be abundant in California but now there more than 100 acres of Charbono vineyards in California. This is a very food friendly red wine. The second wonderful wine is the Petite Sirah from Knights Valley. This is a big wine that is full of flavors.

The increased consumption of wine has led many homeowners to carve out places to store it. For an ever-growing number of people, however, a bottle of fine wine can be as close as the basement or a cabinet underneath the kitchen counter, stored with dozens or even hundreds of others.
Wine consumption in this country appears to be increasing.
Storage of wines is not complicated, but there are some things you should keep in mind to ensure your wine fares well. There are four main elements you need to ensure you control in order to store wine for long periods: Position, temperature, light, and humidity. Follow these simple rules to protect your wines so that they will taste the very best when it comes time to enjoy them.
Position and Peace
Elegant, metallic wine racks can also be hung in the kitchen or dining room. There are many stylish, designer racks available to choose from. They look beautiful when you have many different varieties of wine to show off to your guests. Many racks allow you to assemble them according to your needs. If you need 4, 5 or 6 shelves for your wine bottles, you can always add or subtract one or two shelves to accommodate the number of bottles that keep coming and going.
Temperature
Wines should also be kept away from heat sources and temperatures that are too cold. You don't want them stored in any area that freezing temperatures might occur and cause bottle to break. Too, avoid heat above 64F in order to ensure the wine does not get cooked, another way wine can develop off flavors. The goal is a constant temperature, away from sunlight. Dedicating a cabinet area that is low and safe form heat would work well. Also, there are many wine refrigerators on the market that will keep your wines stored in perfect conditions until you are ready to enjoy them.
Light and Humidity
Light and humidity both affect wine to a lesser, but still significant degree. Wine stored in direct sunlight can undergo changes to the plant based compounds in the wine. Very strong sunlight for long periods can have adverse affects on both the aroma and body of the wine. Humidity should be kept high enough to ensure the cork does not shrink from the outside. But too high a humidity will encourage wild yeast, fungus, and bacteria growth that could promote spoilage. Aiming for 30-60% humidity is ideal.
Of course, if you can do it, a wine cellar is ideal. This is not just a generic term for a place to keep wine. A cellar (below ground) is best because generally temperatures are cooler and more constant. The cellar or basement of a dwelling is also protected from damaging sunlight.
You will be rewarded if you take the time to store your wine properly because the bottles will age well and potentially improve as the years pass. It takes little effort to treat your wines well, but it will help protect your investment and make your drinking experience much more pleasurable.

"Baby" was a smash — it's the most viewed YouTube video of all time — but it peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. In a new list of the 100 biggest songs of 2010 published by Billboard, "Baby" doesn't appear until No. 44. Bieber is probably the best example of the way a young fan base is changing the definition of a hit.
To deal with the Bieber paradox, last week Billboard introduced yet another new chart — the Social 50. It ranks musicians' popularity by looking at sites such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. On that chart, Justin Bieber is No. 2.

Croweology will be released on vinyl as well as CD on August 3rd via The Black Crowes' label Silver Arrow, via Megaforce Records, right in time for the first show on a newly announced leg of dates.
That show will be August 13th in Milwaukee, and follows up two months of various one-offs and festival appearances across the U.S. The Crowes will play in amphitheatres and theaters mainly, trekking all over the Midwest in August. They'll head south the next month, finding themselves in Dallas by the end of September. October finds them heading up northeast, with dates including a five-night stand in New York City at the end of the month and the beginning of November. The band will stay on the East Coast until a two-night hometown stay in Atlanta November 19th and 20th, before hitting the West Coast in early December (more dates may be added in between). The tour ends with The Black Crowes' annual multi-night San Francisco series, beginning December 12th and ending the 19th at The Fillmore.

The shape of wine bottles can communicate a great deal about the taste of the wine inside. In Europe, many wine producing areas developed unique wine bottle shapes that became the traditional bottle for wines of that region.
The high shouldered 'Bordeaux Bottle' is used by most wineries for Cabernet Sauvignon , Merlot, Malbec and most Meritage or Bordeaux blends. This is because those are the key grape varieties that are allowed for use in red wines from the Bordeaux region.
The slope shouldered 'Burgundy Bottle' is generally used for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir around the world. These are the two key grape varieties used in the Burgundy region of France for white and red wine production.
Wine producers in Portugal, Italy, Spain, France and Germany follow the tradition of their local areas in choosing the shape of bottle most appropriate for their wine.
Port, sherry, and Bordeaux varieties: straight-sided and high-shouldered with a pronounced punt. Port and sherry bottles may have a bulbous neck to collect any residue.
Burgundies and Rhône varieties: tall bottles with sloping shoulders and a smaller punt.
Rhine (also known as hock or hoch), Mosel, and Alsace varieties: narrow and tall with little or no punt.
Champagne and other sparkling wines: thick-walled and wide with a pronounced punt and sloping shoulders.
German wines from Franconia: the Bocksbeutel bottle.
The Chianti and some other Italian wines: the fiasco, a round-bottomed flask encased in a straw basket.
Many North and South American, South African, and Australasian wine producers select the bottle shape they wish to associate their wines with. For instance, a producer who believes his wine is similar to Burgundy may choose to bottle his wine in Burgundy-style bottles.
Other producers (both in and out of Europe) have chosen idiosyncratic bottle styles for marketing purposes. Pere-Anselme markets its Châteauneuf-du-Pape in bottles that appear half-melted. The Moselland company of Germany has a riesling with a bottle in the shape of a house cat.
The home wine maker may use any bottle, as the shape of the bottle does not affect the taste of the finished product. The sole exception is in producing sparkling wine, where thicker-walled bottles should be used to handle the excess pressure.
The traditional colours used for wine bottles are:
Bordeaux: dark green for reds, light green for dry whites, clear for sweet whites.
Burgundy and the Rhone: dark green.
Mosel and Alsace: dark to medium green, although some producers have traditionally used amber.
Rhine: amber, although some producers have traditionally used green.
Champagne: Usually dark to medium green. Rosé champagnes are usually a colorless or green.
Clear bottles have recently become popular with white wine producers in many countries, including Greece, Canada and New Zealand. Most red wine worldwide is still bottled in green glass.
Capsules
Most wine bottles finished with a cork (as opposed to a screwcap) have a protective sleeve called a capsule (commonly referred to as a "foil") covering the top of the bottle. Capsules were historically made of lead, and protected the cork from being gnawed away by rodents or infested with cork weevil. Because of research showing that trace amounts of toxic lead could remain on the lip of the bottle and mix with the poured wine, lead capsules (lead foil bottleneck wrappings) were slowly phased out, and by the 1990s,most capsules were made of tin, heat-shrink plastic (polyethylene or PVC), or aluminium.
Punts

A punt, also known as a kick-up, refers to the dimple at the bottom of a wine bottle. There is no consensus explanation for its purpose.
Glass retains its colour on recycling, and the United Kingdom has a large surplus of green glass because it imports a large quantity of wine but produces very little. 1.4 million tonnes are sent to landfill annually.

A cool summer along the West Coast has made for a hurried harvest in the nation's top winemaking regions as growers rush to beat the first frost. Vintners, however, are hopeful the late grapes will make great wine.
It's a matter of simple science: Grapes become sweeter as they develop but they need sun and heat to do so. When the grapes are crushed and loaded into barrels, the sugar turns into alcohol during fermentation.
With less exposure to sun and heat, the grapes will have less sugar and produce wines with less alcohol. But, vintners say, the wines should be beautifully balanced and full-flavored.
"We expect more understated wines from this vintage," said Rob Sinskey, 51, who owns Robert Sinskey Vineyards in the Carneros region of Napa.
"High-alcohol wines are power wines. They're showy in a wine tasting," he continued. "We think these will be more elegant, floral, with beautiful aromatics and exotic overtones."
Wines from France, Italy and Spain — the leading wine producing countries — have average alcohol levels of 12 to 13 percent. Most New World wines — those coming out of the U.S., Chile and Australia — tend to have slightly higher alcohol levels, about 14 to 15 percent.
But this year, the wines coming from California, Oregon and Washington will be different because the grapes took longer to ripen and won't contain as much sugar as usual, said Doug Adams, a viticulture professor at University of California, Davis.
"A lot of winemakers were waiting for a year like this," Adams said.
White wines from this year's crop are expected to be ready in nine months to a year, while reds will take about two to four years, depending on type.
Oregon produces about 2 million cases of wine each year, mostly Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay. It had highly rated vintages in 1999 and 2008, and this season's temperatures are similar, said Sam Tannahill, 41, a winemaker and interim director of the Oregon Wine Board.
But while the grapes hold the promise of fine wine, they still must be brought in. Some Oregon growers were just beginning to pick grapes last week, increasing the risk they'll run into a frost.
"Every year I'm reminded that I'm just a farmer. I might produce a fancy product, but I'm still just a farmer dealing with soil and weather and vines," Tannahill said.
He added: "There's a lot that can happen in three weeks."
The harvest in California's Napa Valley also is running about three weeks behind after workers waited for the grapes to ripen. Some growers said they were bringing in extra help to move the harvest along.
"It's been a year of extremes," said Jon Emmerich, 47, a winemaker with Silverado Vineyards in Napa. "It was a cool season and then hot and then we'd get a ridiculous cold snap — it was just crazy. We've been kind of dancing around the weather."
The same was true along the California coast.
"We've all got our fingers crossed. We're hoping it'll turn out to be a good year and not just a scary year," said Jason Haas, 37, general manager of Tablas Creek Vineyard in Paso Robles, which is about halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
"We know that the longer the grapes spend on the vine, the better they show the signature of the place," Haas said. "But November and rains are coming up soon."
Typically warm areas, such as the San Joaquin Valley, are also dealing with a late harvest but most of their fruit will reach normal levels, Adams said.
About 90 percent of the wine made in the U.S. comes from California, which grows about 3 million tons of grapes each year and produces more than 2.3 billion bottles of wine, according to its Department of Food and Agriculture.
Washington state is the country's No. 2 winemaker, with some 37,000 acres of vines spread across the desert-like eastern part of the state.
Washington growers were halfway through harvest Thursday, running about two weeks late, said Ryan Pennington, spokesman for the Washington State Wine Commission.
"Most years, the concern is to make sure the grapes don't get overripe," he said. "But Mother Nature has really thrown us a curve-ball."
